More frequent summer droughts are likely as the climate changes. The UK Climate Impacts Programme predicts that summer rainfall in this area could be at least 20-25% lower by the 2080s (50% probability). For more information on projected climate impacts, see the Climate Change pages.
Water supply is already a concern on the Isle of Sheppey. Elmley Isle bird reserve often have to pump water from their local reservoir to maintain the habitats favoured by wading birds. Water supply is likely to become more of an issue as summers become hotter and drier, particularly if tourist numbers increase.
